In the end of Edo era, Chokkaku is born in a strict but poor samurai family. He hates anything corrupt, and he determines to follow the spirit of Samurai.
Chokkaku enters a prestigious yet old-fashioned school, Meirinkan. Having a boy from humble family is unprecedented in the history of Meirinkan. With wild dreams of attending the school, Chokkaku knocks on the door of the school. However, there, he finds students are evaluated by the family lineage but not their ability. Being unsatisfied by the old tradition, Chokkaku goes head to head against the classmates and senior students.
Chokkaku is usually quite goofy but cheerful, and he always stands firmly against injustices. Chokkaku's likable personality starts to change the mind of students and the school little by little.
