Miaka, a junior high school girl, stumbles across an old book in the library. As she opens it, she is sucked into the book and finds herself in a strange place that looks like ancient China. Guided by the book, Miaka meets a boy called Tamahome, and they begin to be attracted to each other.
In this world, Miaka becomes a shrine maiden to Suzaku, the red phoenix God. Together with her seven sacred worriers to protect the God, she challenges to a mission to save a country called Kuounankoku. However, Yui, Miaka's best friend who is also sucked into the book, appears in front of Miaka as a shrine maiden of Seiryu, the blue dragon God that is a fated opponent of Suzaku. Yui, being traumatized by sorrowful events, shuts her heart to Miaka. The battle between Suzaku and Seiryu is about to begin. What would happen to Miaka's precious love and friendship?
